Road Trip Along the St. Johns River
19 Old Florida Towns on Florida's Historic North Flowing River
The St. Johns River is the longest Florida river entirely within the state. It is one of only a few rivers in the United States that flows from south to north.
The river begins in the swampy areas of western Indian River County near Blue Cypress Lake. It then flows slowly north and passes through many communities on its journey to the Atlantic Ocean east of Jacksonville. It was an important transportation route in the earliest days of Florida’s history.
Here are some Florida cities and towns that have been part of that history.
I've arranged them in the same order as you would see them if you are journeying upstream from the Atlantic Ocean southward to Sanford in the Orlando metro area.
