Palatka is a small city on the St. Johns River about 60 miles upriver (south) from Jacksonville. It is strategically located at a sharp bend on the river that is the unofficial boundary between "upriver" and "downriver" St. Johns.
In the old days, the larger steamboats could load up in Jacksonville or northern seaports and easily navigate the deep waters of the St. Johns River to Palatka.
