The Palm Beach area was first inhabited by Native Americans. The Jaega tribe lived on the barrier island 3,000 years ago that became Palm Beach in modern times.
The area became fashionable after Henry Flagler extended his railroad south from St. Augustine. It reached what is now West Palm Beach in 1894. Flagler quickly started transforming the island into a resort for the rich and famous.
