Green Cove Springs is south of Jacksonville on the St. Johns River. The river is deep at this location, and at the end of World War Two the U.S. Navy kept a large part of their “mothball fleet” at docks constructed on the river.
The fleet was a familiar site to Floridians until it was moved in the 1960s. The city itself remains a beautiful and historic place, and it is still fun to visit the docks and look at some of the vessels that are berthed there.
