I first visited Cross Creek while a student at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The tiny community is located 18 miles southeast of Gainesville. This photo from 1965 is how I remember first seeing it.
Its most famous resident was the writer Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, whose novel “The Yearling” won the Pulitzer Prize. Her home has been preserved as a state park and has changed very little since Ms. Rawlings lived there.
