Alachua is a city of 11,000 located about 16 miles northwest of Gainesville in Alachua County. The name apparently derives from the Seminole-Creek word "luchawa" meaning jug. The “jug” was a nearby sinkhole.
Modern times have seen Alachua transition from an agricultural town to a more diverse economy, embracing various industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and education.
